The science of prosthetic limb replacement has seen several technological advances over the last few decades, allowing many amputees to live relatively normal lives. Soldiers suffering horrific combat injuries are able to walk proudly again. Athletes missing limbs are able to compete at a high level, even winning Olympic medals. But humans aren’t the only species to benefit from artificial limbs! There was a time when an injured animal would likely have to be put down due to lack of mobility. But when brilliant minds come together, awesome things can happen.
Meet Oscar. In 2009, the then 2-year-old cat lost both of his hind paws after becoming entangled in a combine harvester. The vet treating Oscar referred his owners to an orthopedic surgeon who suggested he was an ideal candidate for a ground-breaking procedure which had never been attempted before. Special implants were designed and attached to holes drilled into the cat’s ankle bones. The material used for the implants allowed tissue to naturally bind to them, preventing infection. Prosthetic blades were then fitted to the implants, similar to the type used by human amputees.
After healing and adjusting to the prostheses, Oscar regained his mobility, along with new found fame after a video uploaded to Youtube gained widespread attention. The technique used to fit Oscar has now been adapted to humans. We think you’ll agree that Oscar is an amazing cat, and a testament to what can happen when science and compassion come together!
